1989 was a landmark year. A year when the actions of a tiny country reverberated around the globe and changed the course of history.
Despite the overbearing presence of 80,000 Soviet troops in their backyard, Hungarians tore down the iron curtain, gave shelter to tens of thousands of East German and Romanian refugees and opened their border with Austria – an act which precipitated the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany.
In 1989 we were truly worthy of our sufferings: we remained noble, generous, dignified.
The purpose of 89Gallery.com is to show the world, through the magnificent work of contemporary Hungarian artists, that the spirit of ’89 is alive and well. We aim to bring you the best that Hungary has to offer. So do watch this space!
